For years many 1911 smiths have used the round blue armorer’s block from Brownells. It has always served its purpose for driving out pins or holding a barrel in the V-groove. Last year, Hilton Yam and his 10-8 Performance products introduced a new glass reinforced nylon 1911 armorer’s block. This one is a multi-featured block that seems to be replacing the “blue blocks of cheese” on many benches.

In addition to the holes and V-groove to remove pins and hold a barrel, this block has been designed to aid in checking the hammer/sear engagement, adjusting and tuning the extractor, and fitting the thumb safety. The block also has holes that line up with the grip bushings to hold the frame. The armorer’s block includes a cut-out to accommodate the plunger tube. Two blocks can be used to clamp a frame into a vise.
